summer fast approaching the International Champions Cup (ICC) is right around the corner and the schedule has been released.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, AS Roma, Juventus, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain will participate in the pre-season tournament, which will begin on July 19th.
The ICC began in 2013 in an effort to bring higher quality soccer to the United States. In addition, it was an opportunity to further expose some of Europe’s top clubs to the average fan, who cannot watch them.
This year’s tournament will give American fans a unique opportunity to witness one of the top rivalries in all of European soccer, “El Classico,” between Real Madrid and Barcelona. The two clubs have never played each other in the United States.
Unfortunately, the biggest criticism regarding the ICC has been star players sitting out. Despite a “trophy,” being up for grabs, the teams treat the tournament as a friendly match. As a result, many iconic player will not play or not play nearly as much as they would during the regular season.
