AC Milan has opened transfer talks to keep on-loan Gerard Deulofeu at the San Siro permanently, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Milan CEO Adriano Galliani reached out to Everton to begin working on negotiations for the Spaniard.

Although the Rossoneri want to keep the winger, Barcelona can sign its former player by activating a €12 million buy-back clause at the end of the season, according to Calciomercato.com.

However, Barcelona’s international sporting director Ariedo Braida has been working with Milan due to his friendship with Galliani.

Deulofeu came up through the Blaugrana’s academy. The Spanish giants owned Deulofeu until 2015 when Everton then signed the player permanently. Deulofeu also played for Everton on loan in the 2013-2014 season.

The 23-year-old only scored five goals in 62 total appearances in all of his time at Everton and was not receiving much playing time with the English side.

Milan signed Deulofeu on a loan deal from Everton in January, and the youngster has been able to display his talents with the Italian side.

Deulofeu has recorded three assists and a goal in 11 total appearances for Milan since joining the club. His lone goal was the eventual game winner against Fiorentina (2-1).

He also received a call-up to Spain’s national team due to his performances. The player scored his first senior team goal against France on Tuesday, March 28 in a friendly.

Milan opened the transfer talks due to Deulofeu’s play. However, it will remain to be seen whether the Serie A club can strike a deal with Everton, or if Barcelona will swoop in to bring the player back to the Camp Nou.

Signing Deuloefu to a permanent deal would be very beneficial to Milan. After struggling so much at Everton and Sevilla and not getting any run on Barcelona’s senior team, he’s finally beginning to play up to potential.

Milan could end up going through a lot of change if the Chinese takeover is completed. Therefore, keeping a young player who has already been playing well for the team will help in a possible transitioning period.
