After a fine performance in Germany last week Madrid returned home up 2-1 on aggregate. The defending champions were without Gareth Bale for the return leg after he picked up an injury. As for Bayern they received back Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski, two of the top players at their position.
Arturo Vidal was on a yellow when he went in on the ball and played it cleanly but for some reason the referee decided to pull out a second yellow and set Madrid up for the win. After a penalty by Lewandowski Bayern was tied with Madrid and the game would be going into overtime.
Thomas Muller was then subbed on for the German Giants and almost instantly Cristiano Ronaldo and his golden head met the ball in the box and snuck the ball past Manuel Neuer for the lead.
But yet again there was more drama at the Bernabeau with a pass back that ended in absolute disaster by Sergio Ramos that trickled on by Keylor Navas to pull Bayern level once again!
Now for more controversy! At the brink of the first half at overtime Cristiano Ronaldo was in an offside position but due to the ref’s not calling the play, Madrid went ahead and never looked back as they advance to the semi-final yet again. He would put back one more goal in the second half along with Asensio for the final dagger and adding to his champions league record of goals scored.
Unfortunately Bayern’s campaign for another Champions League title will be out on hold until next season and Madrid is still alive and looks to be the first club to repeat since AC Milan and have now advanced to their 7th consecutive semi-final.
